C.A.A. Newsletter - Andy's Angle
April 2003.
Welcome members old and new
to another round up of what’s happening in YOUR Association!
WE CAN WORK IT OUT!
You may remember last year that our annual competition for the TRE-POL-PEN
trophy against our friends from the Mounts Bay Angling Society ended in
some controversy. This was due to some new members of the M.B.A.S seemingly
breaking the rules of this particular competition by not fishing at the
same mark as their opposite number from our team. The lads from the M.B.A.S
caught some good fish where as our lads who were at the agreed venue did
not! The fish caught at the ‘incorrect’ venue meant that the
M.B.A.S won the competition and this was queried at the weigh in. After
a business like discussion it was agreed by the two team captains and
club chairmen that the rules had indeed been broken, but this had only
happened due to the individuals involved not fully understanding the rules
of this competition. After the discussion the two team captains shook
hands and it was decided that the result on the day should stand leaving
the M.B.A.S as winners of the TRE-POL-PEN shield in 2003
The important thing was that
we all left on good terms with an undertaking to get together in order
to revamp and reprint the rules to stop this kind of thing happening in
the future. Recently as promised representatives from the M.B.A.S joined
some of our number around the table, and over a pint or two put down in
black and white the rules that will be used in this seasons battle for
the TRE-POL-PEN Shield. Like the man on the TV said ‘IT’S
GOOD TO TALK!’
WE CAN’T WORK IT
OUT!
In my last newsletter I reported that we had received a letter from the
Carnell Green Angling Club saying that they did not want to fish us this
year in what is normally the annual W.Irland competition. No reason was
given for this in the letter so in my capacity as Association Chairman
I contacted Mr Mike Negus the Chairman of the Carnell Green A.C with a
view to finding out their reasons for this course of action.
Mike very kindly came around
to my house and during an informal chat indicated that absolutely nobody
in his club wished to fish against us. When I enquired why this was Mike
explained that his members had been upset that we had apparently ‘nicked’
the date for their open festival (a competition that is well supported
by our members) last year and also that they were unhappy that the identification
of a fish weighed in on last years W.Irland competition had been queried
after it had been weighed.
I apologised to Mike on behalf
of our Association if we had indeed clashed with their date and assured
him that if this was the case then it had been purely accidental, I further
explained that we always try to work out our dates to avoid clashes with
any other clubs competitions. On the subject of the identification of
the fish in last years W.Irland competition I had to say that my recollection
of the events were rather different to his! I mentioned to Mike that I
felt that if his club had a grievance about either of these events surely
it was better to bring them up at the time and work them out rather than
wait until months afterwards when events get hazy in the mind. I told
him that I felt that to let things get so bad that his club did not wish
to fish us was silly.
I went on to say that no matter what had happened in the past we could
take steps to ensure there are no misunderstanding in the future I suggested
that representatives from our two clubs could get together each year to
jointly arrange dates to stop the possibility of any clashes. I also suggested
that we could re-vamp the rules of the W.Ireland competition to include
action to be taken if there is any doubt regarding the identification
of a fish or any other rule changes or clarification felt necessary. This
I said would hopefully stop any misunderstandings and safeguard the future
friendship between our clubs.
Most of all I explained to
Mike that the friendship enjoyed between our clubs over many years was
too good to let go and asked him to approach his club and ask them if
some representatives would meet with us to hopefully sort out any grievances.
After an hour or so of friendly constructive talk Mike left promising
to do this but said he could make no guarantees as to the position of
his club, which I fully understood. The day after our meeting I wrote
to Mike thanking him for taking the time to talk to me and reiterating
the points we had discussed. At the time of writing this was over 3 weeks
ago and since then I have heard nothing, perhaps it’s not good to
talk after all!!
HAT RICK!!
When Nicky Pryor returned to the scales with a Shore Rockling of 0-15-0
on the 23rd of March he became a triple winner! Nicky’s Rockling
not only secured him a plaque as the winner of our March friendly competition,
but also the first prize in the County Angler open competition held over
the same weekend. He also picked up a fantastic Abu beach rod worth £160
as the winner of the County Angler specie hunt. This specie hunt was run
over the coarse of the 6 County Angler open competitions held during the
winter, and the prize was given to the angler who caught the most number
of differing species. Nicky won this with a grand total of seven differing
species which is a good total but all the more commendable as Nicky only
fished in two of the competition a fantastic achievement well done Nicky!!
Second in the County Angler
open was another Association member Steve Savage with a fine Mackerel
of 1-7-0. Bringing up the rear in third place with yet another surprise
L-s-d of 2-6-0 was yours truly. Thanks to Jon at the County Angler for
running these competitions that help keep the enthusiasm going during
the cold winter months.
THERE ARE MONSTERS OUT
THERE!
Yes there really are and some of them are being caught, the usual run
of spring mackerel are showing at Porthkerris along with the usual crowds.
Some excellent bags of Mackerel have been taken which is not unusual but
what is unusual is the reported size of some of these fish. Reports have
reached me of several fish over the magic 2LBS with the best scaling a
monstrous 2-8-0 and falling to an angler from the Helston Club!
FIRST CAST SUCCESS.
I love it when a plan comes together so when Steve Badcock and I bought
some king rag worm and headed off in search of plaice I was delighted
to see him catch a orange spotted beauty on his first cast. I was even
more delighted when he again caught one on his second cast. I then started
to catch and quickly caught him up with our final score Steve 2 spotted
beauties and two Pollack to my 7 beauties and two Pollack. I also managed
the biggest fish of the day with a beauty of about 2-6. The only difference
was Steve’s spotted beauties were Plaice and mine were all yes you’ve
guessed bl**dy DOGFISH why do they pick on me!!
I DIDN’T MEAN TO!
A fair entry of 11 anglers signed on for our April Plaque competition.
The weekend before this competition I had again gone fishing for plaice
and this time actually managed to catch two and what’s more Steve
didn’t catch any, AND I didn’t catch ANY DOGFISH HOORAY! So
it was with this in mind that I decided that I would win the April Plaque
with a plaice so off Steve and I go with a foolproof plan. Back at the
weigh in I was disappointed that only four anglers came back, and even
more disappointing was the fact that I had the only fish which meant that
I win this years March Plaque with a fine fish of 2-1-6. Oh ye it was
a dogfish not a plaice, well what did you expect!
SMASHING IDEA !!
Spring is in the air and if you are like me you must be thinking about
putting in one or two trips in search of mullet. I realy enjoy mulleting,
but have to confess that I find mincing Mackerel to make up ‘browse’
a real bind. At our last meeting down at the St Michaels Mount Inn Barripper
Nicki Pryor shared his idea with me on how to make ‘browse’
making easier. Nicki explained that he is lucky enough to live on a rather
busy section of road, so when he is planning a Mullet season all he needs
to do is place 10 or 20 mackerel in the road outside his house before
going to bed. Next morning he gets up nice and early and scrapes the nicely
minced Mackerel off the road between his house and Falmouth and into his
‘browse’ bucket job done simple! He went on to say that it
apparently also works with cats!! (Only joking!)
EGGTRAORDINARY FISH!
Our annual four-day Easter open competition produced some realy excellent
fish this year. Despite a slightly lower entry than the last few years
possibly caused by the CFSA starting to run a very similar competition,
the quality of the fish was fantastic. Forty anglers signed on to fish
this year and exactly half of them weighed in fish.
Top fish was a fantastic Thick
Lip Mullet of 6-3-5 155.182% that was taken by Kevin Lenderyou of Falmouth
who walked away with £70 for his trouble but I’m sure he would
have been delighted just with the fish! Chris Wills of Redruth secured
the 2nd prize of £40 with a lovely Guilt Head Bream of 3-12-14 138.332%.
In 3rd place was our old friend ‘F.J’ Williams from Carnell
Green with a nice 3 Bearded Rockling 2-4-11 130.982%. In the final prize
position with a fine fish that would have won many competitions was Rob
Instance of Falmouth with another lovely Mullet of 5-2-9 128.997%.
In the junior section Camborne
brothers Dorran and Kian Williams took the honours with Dorran winning
two reels for his L-S-D of 2-4-1 and Kian collecting a reel for his L-S-D
of 2-1-0. A big well done to all our winners and thanks for their support.
YOU NEVER KNOW!
My son Martin and I went to the Saturday Morning Weigh in for our Easter
competition and witnessed the fine Guilt Head Bream and Mullet Caught
by Chris Wills and Rob Instance being weighed. Martin decided that he
to would catch a Guilt Head and despite my warnings that I felt it was
a long shot, he purchased some worms and badgered me into taking him down
to Carnsue Pool Hayle.
I dropped Martin off and informed
him that I felt he was wasting his time (I’m always the optimist!)
About 10 minutes after I got home the phone rang and it was Martin on
his mobile to inform me that he had caught one, so much for my warnings
he said. The only thing was that his fish was not a Guilt Head but a rather
nice fat out of season Flounder of 2-3-15! It just goes to show that sea
angling is a funny old game and you never know what’s out there!!
MY LUCKY DAY!
The Tuesday after the long Easter weekend I was due to go back to work
on the late shift IE starting work at 2.pm, I spent most of the morning
doing some work on my boat. My brother Steve had very kindly taken Martin
with him and his two boys Kian and Dorran for a days fishing out at Porthkerris
where they hoped to catch some big Garfish. At about 12.30 my phone rang
and on the other end was my boss who informed me that they had no power
so it was not worth me coming in so I could have the day off, excellent
my lucky day!!
After a chat with my wife
Linda we decided that we to would go out to Porthkerris, as it was such
a nice day she would read her magazines and Michael my younger son who
is not too keen on fishing could play with his cousin. We arrived out
there and were amazed that it was almost deserted. Spoiled by all the
space I set up two rods one with a float and the other to spin with. The
fishing was quite slow with only the occasional Mackerel falling to my
spinning rod and the float not doing anything. Michael amused himself
trying to fill in the sea with rocks!
After a few hours both Dorran
and Kian had caught a nice Garfish each all I had managed was about 8
Mackerel. After a while Linda came down on the rock and had a go with
my float rod, I warned her that nothing much was happening but as she
is generally quite lucky we were both optimistic, however on this occasion
her luck did dot work and she caught nothing.
As it had been a good hour
since anything had been caught we decided to start packing up, I would
fillet the Mackerel while Linda continued to fish with the float. Michael
now probably running out of rocks joined us asking that as I was not using
the spinning rod could he have a go? I said he could but warned him it
was low tide so he would have to wind quite fast.
On Michaels second cast he
announced he was stuck in the bottom so I took the rod from him expecting
‘a fast pack away’ however it pulled out intact so I handed
him the rod and went back to my filleting. A few minuets later Michael
announced he was stuck again and I took the rod expecting to pull for
a break out. As soon as I took the rod it was obvious that the bottom
was pulling back! So I handed the rod back to Michael who struggled to
continue winding in, my light spinning rod was hooped over like a car
Ariel then it came into sight! It was the biggest Garfish I have seen
for ages, Michael dragged it out and I grabbed it and put it in a pool
where we both stared at it amazed. Is that a big one dad Michael enquired?
Yes it was and later the scales revealed it to weigh 1-14-14 a new Association
and county junior record!
Both Doran’s and Kian’s Garfish would prove to weigh over
1-8-0 and me well I didn’t actually manage to catch any Gars at
all, well it was MY lucky day!
PORTHKERRIS
As promised Brian Collick chairman of Redruth AC attended our April meeting.
Brian went into great detail to explain steps that are being taken to
ensure access to the popular angling venue at Porthkerris is not restricted.
Legal steps are being taken by St Kevern Parish council in order that
the road leading to the quarry at Porthkerris is available at all times
and access is not restricted by a locked gate. Brian explained that as
unrestricted access has been enjoyed for over twenty years there is a
legal right for it to be continued. This legal right may have to be proved
in court and with this in mind Brian will provide forms that include a
signed statement to the effect, that an individual has used the access
road for at least twenty years. At our meeting Brian was asked to provide
twenty such forms that will be filled in by members of our Association
and handed back to St Kevern parish council to be used in any forth coming
legal action. Brian did however emphasise that this action is only to
ensure access at all times and cannot affect the owners right to charge
for parking ECT.
