Society Summer Trips 2005 |
Our first trip of the season was to Richards Castle .
The castle was built by Richard Fitzscrob, a Norman Knight who settled here
before the Conquest of 1066.
On the same hilltop stands St Bartholomew's church, with a norman tower and detached bell tower, one of only 42 in the country, of which seven are in Herefordshire. This was added in 1300.
Our second visit was the fantastic National Welsh Folk Museum standing in the grounds of St Fagan's castle.
This is a late 16th century manor house generously donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth.
The 100 acre parkland has over 30 original buildings which have been re-located from various parts of Wales.
There are also large indoor galleries with exhibitions of most aspects of local daily life in bygone days.
Our final field trip in 2005 was to the churches of Pixley, Putley, Much Marcle & Kempley.
Pixley - Early English in style with interesting carvings.
Putley - Re-built in 1875.
Much Marcle - The memorial to Blanche Mortimer.
Kempley - Pure Arts & Crafts, built just over a century ago.
Due to Pixley church roof being repaired, we visited Aylton church, then on to Putley.
