Can I use stuff I already have ?
Of course, as long as it is not obviously modern. For troos, use single-colour jogging pants or leggings. Not tracksuit trousers with lines down the side. If you want to dye things, use Dylon machine wash (tell your mum / wife / non-gaming significant other it's quite safe in her / his / its washing machine, but run an empty wash through after, just in case). This will work on natural fibres (cotton, wool, etc) but will also work on synthetic mixtures (e.g. poly-cotton) but will be patchy or a bit pale. Aim for drab earthy tones - browns and greens. If you want to use a sweatshirt or long-sleeve t-shirt, fine, but use a plain one - no pictures or logos. Also, rip the neck and cuffs off first. Again, go for drab colours.
What about armour ?
Wear armour if you want, but follow these rules : you can only gain the benefit of an armour skill if you are wearing the correct costume armour. Furs and leather, padded jacks, etc are easy to cobble together. There is a padded jack pattern on this page, and it can be added to easily to make studded or ringmail armour. Heavy armour is of metal. If you want to wear chain mail, you will wear metal chain mail. Yes, this is expensive, but you get what you pay for, and it is not essential to play. You could, of course, buy a couple pounds of sprung washers and make your own. If so, we want European four-in-one or six-in-one pattern please. There are many web-sites showing the technique, with one at least even showing animations of construction! Bear in mind that all metal armour is checked for safety and rough edges. Fence wire is easy to use, but does not make a safe suit of chain. Avoid it. Plastic chain mail is not allowed, nor is knitted and sprayed chain.
