National Westminster Bank: corner of Derwent Street and Stuart Street

Originally Harwood's printing works, also known as Compton House, (completed by 1932), this building has been derelict on several occasions during its history, only to bounce back under some guise or other, whether as a car showroom or even, some time in the 1980's, a night-club. Its latest 'life', as you can see, is as a bank serving the part of the city centre on the northern side of the River Derwent. With bank branch closures being a very 'hot topic' at the moment, however, it may not be long before it will have to enter another 'life'. It is with some relief, though, that a party at NatWest has been in touch with me to reassure me that there are absolutely no plans for closure. It is good to note that the mosaic work clock, (a landmark for my mother during her lunch breaks while working nearby), is back in working order. Building designed by Naylor, Sale and Widdows.
