The 'Central Improvement Scheme' did not restrict itself only to
the City Centre side of the River Derwent. In one of the first examples of
city-centre public amenity housing to be built in the country, C. H.
Aslin's Borough Architects' team designed a low-rise block of
apartments over on the northern bank of the river, complete with the
blue mosaic detailing, that can just be seen in the white strips
running between the rows of windows, which sets off very nicely the
mosaic clock on the current National Westminster Bank just across
Derwent Street.
Unfortunately, it was reported in the 'Derby Evening Telegraph'
that, as part of the ongoing 'Derby Cityscape' scheme, a new entertainment complex
could be built on this site, resulting in the demolition of yet another constituent
part of the 'C.I.S.'. It seems as if a new front is being opened up as I write in the war
to preserve the best of C.H. Aslin's legacy to the City of Derby.
By way of 'late news', according to Cityscape's plans there is no building that is recognisably Exeter Place Apartments
included, so that would seem to confirm that it is intended to go, even though the aforementioned entertainment complex
plan has fallen through. Cityscape has this 'vision of city living'. Well, here it is - ready-built for them!
Current 'Derby Art Deco Audit' threat level: Probable short- to medium-term danger.
