Built in the late 1920's, this early example of Art Deco was for
many years before its take-over by the Derbyshire Building Society
the private, family-run department store, Barlow & Taylor.
Floodlit at night, which shows up the bas-relief work on the façade
superbly, it now makes a magnificent spectacle at the very heart of
the city's nightlife.
Its latest transmogrification, as can be seen by the above photograph, is as Nandos take-away
- a far-from-perfect use in terms of dignity, but it is a whole lot better than demolition!
Current 'Derby Art Deco Audit' threat level: Safe.
