Deco detail from Exeter Bridge: on plaque by bottom of lamp-post, "Exeter Bridge: Rebuilt 1929-31, opened March 13th 1931, Rt. Hon. Herbert Morrison M.P. P.C. Architect C.H. Aslin Engineers L.G. Mouchel & Partners Ltd."

View of Exeter Bridge from Riverside Gardens: another part of Aslin's 'Central Improvement Scheme'

Detail from rear of Magistrates' Courts/Police Station; near western end of Exeter Bridge

Above are three views of structures originating from C.H. Aslin's 'Central Improvement Scheme'. The top- and bottom-most of these photographs, as can be seen from the captions, have been taken from virtually the same place, showing what a compact site this most unified example of inter-war town planning is.
Note the bas-relief panel on the rear of the Magistrates' Court/Police Station. (If I had anything as sophisticated as a telephoto camera you'd have a real close-up!) The windows are in their original state as well.
In the 'Derby Evening Telegraph' of 7th. February 2000, it was reported that the Magistrates' Courts/Police Station is to receive a Grade II listing; surely as clear an indication as one could wish for of the quality of Aslin's work.
In the Derby Cityscape plans the MC/PS building is to be converted to residential use.

Current 'Derby Art Deco Audit' threat level: Safe.
