This building was one of the many designs of the team led by Derby
Borough Architect, Charles Herbert Aslin, who went on to greater
fame, (indeed world-wide renown), post-WWII for his ground-breaking
system building scheme for schools in Hertfordshire.
Please note the tower-like structures either side of the main entrance, which were
originally shops designed to help finance the initial development. Aslin also designed the
rest of the street frontage. Please note, also, in the second photograph the distinctive,
(and unexpected), broad stone band along the upper storey.
Q Arts are to move to the new QUAD Centre sometime next year, offering a superb opportunity for an exhibition space dedicated to the life and work of Aslin at this site.
Current 'Derby Art Deco Audit' threat level: Safe, but possible long-term threat from proposal for an Olympic-sized pool at Moorways (downgrading?).
