As can clearly be seen, refurbishment work was, in the Autumn of 1999, at full swing on this classic Art Deco cinema building on London Road, which I remember as the 'Odeon', but was originally opened as the 'Gaumont'. According to Ashley Franklin's book, 'A Cinema Near You', (page 72), published by Breedon Books (1996), this was designed by British Gaumont's Chief Architect, Mr. W.E. Trent. This building was re-opened as the 'Zanzibar' on the 24th. November 1999. Visit the 'Zanzibar' site by clicking on the aforementioned link.
Latest news is that 'Zanzibar' is to close in a couple of years' time, after which this building - the last of the great classic Art Deco-era cinema buildings remaining standing in Derby City Centre - is to be demolished for eventual purposes as yet unknown. It has been suggested to this site that it could be an ideal conferencing venue, within easy walking distance of the Railway Station. I have the idea of it as a home to a prestigious theatre, which the city needs. However, it is my understanding that the former Hippodrome is intended to re-open for this purpose, so that idea might tread on the Hippodrome's toes. Any additional suggestions for uses to help save this building are welcome. Please go to the main page of the Tour for contact details.
