Training Courses

So you want to become a referee?

1. Are you at least 14 years of age?
2. Have you got reasonably good eyesight (with contact lenses or spectacles if worn)?
3. Are you reasonably fit?

Please note however, you cannot take a basic referees course if you have already taken a course within the previous three months and failed.

The Chesterfield Referees Association is always keen to encourage the training of new referees. The RA regularly runs training courses to recruit new members.

The Training Course usually lasts between 8-10 evenings (usually held on a Wednesday), which is followed by two examinations based on the Laws of Association Football which can be located on the 'Laws of the Game' page above. The Laws of the Game is the annual book that FIFA releases before the start of each season with the latest Laws and Procedure's etc.

The examinations are both very straightforward. The first examination, which is a written exam lasts for 1 hour. The questions and examinations are set by The Football Association. An example of a question might be:

Question: A United player shoots on goal when an Athletic player, who is stood on the goal line leaps into the air and palms the ball over the crossbar. What action do you take and how do you restart the game? (2 Marks)

Answer: The United player is sent off for denying an opponent a goal scoring opportunity and the game is restarted with a penalty kick.

The second examination is an Oral exam. Each candidate is asked questions by an examiner, to which they have to give straightforward answers to the questions they are asked. An example of a question may be:

Question: What do the Laws say relating Corner Flags? (2 Marks)

Answer: The Law specifies that corner flags should be at least 5 ft high with a non pointed top.
